Detroit DD16 GHG14 (2014-16) Fault Code: SPN 190 FMI 0 (MCM) Engine Over Speed
DESCRIPTION:
This fault code sets when the engine speed is above 2500 rpm.
MONITORED PARAMETER:
Engine speed
TYPICAL ENABLING CONDITIONS:
Engine speed greater than idle.
MONITOR SEQUENCE:
None
EXECUTION FREQUENCY:
Continuous when enabling conditions met.
TYPICAL DURATION:
Two seconds
DASH LAMPS:
MIL
ENGINE REACTION:
Engine brakes are activated.
VERIFICATION:
Start and run the engine.
POSSIBLE CAUSES:
1. Vehicle was driven downhill in too low of a gear or without using the engine brakes.
2. Vehicle equipped with a DT12 transmission driven downhill with the engine brakes set on high.
3. Crankshaft speed sensor fault.
4. External combustible fluids drawn into the air intake.
NOTE: This fault code can be induced by the driver while the vehicle is traveling downhill.; There will be a message in the instrument cluster (IC) to warn the driver that the engine speed is too high. The check engine light (CEL) will also sets at this time. Once the engine rpm is within normal operating range, the message in the IC and the CEL will no longer be present.
NOTE: For DT12 equipped vehicles, the transmission will automatically downshift to provide higher rpms to increase Jake Brake effectiveness. This is especially true with Jake brakes in the high setting. CPC software R32 and proper versions have a target downshift speed of 2300 rpm. CPC software R33 and higher have lowered the target downshift speed to 2200 rpm to provide more margin against logging engine overspeed codes. To further prevent engine overspeed codes, if the Jake brake alone do not sloe the vehicle, it may be necessary for the driver to apply the service brakes. If maximum Jake brake effectiveness is not needed, such as vehicles that are lightly loaded or with no load, then select either the low or medium Jake brake setting to provide less aggressive downshifts.
NOTE: This is an information only code. It means the engine went after than 2500 RPM for a specified time. Talk to the driver.
